Module 1Agent vs. Chatbot

The Big Idea: Agent vs. Chatbot

AI agents and chatbots can overlap. A rule-based chatbot follows predefined scripts or keyword rules and may reach a dead end outside them. Modern chatbots can also use language models; the distinction here is an agent's configured ability to use knowledge, tools, and workflows.

An AI agent can act as a digital team member. Depending on configuration and service availability, it can support around-the-clock interactions, use context and knowledge, and take authorized actions such as sending a follow-up email or logging a support ticket.

In the raia platform, an agent can share instructions and business knowledge across configured surfaces such as website chat, SMS, email, and voice. Availability, continuity, and visibility depend on each surface's configuration and access controls.

The Four Superpowers of a raia Agent

1. Reasoning over Rules: Instead of following a script, an agent uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to understand intent and formulate a response based on its instructions and available knowledge. It can handle questions it has never seen before by reasoning from first principles.

2. Knowledge Retrieval (RAG): Agents dynamically retrieve information from a proprietary Vector Store — your company's documents, policies, and data — to answer questions accurately. This is called Retrieval-Augmented Generation.

3. Tool Execution: With configured access, permissions, and tested integrations, agents can execute functions, call APIs, trigger n8n workflows, and take authorized action in external systems like your CRM, helpdesk, or database.

4. Human Oversight: Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) workflows let operators monitor conversations and step in when needed. Available controls and takeover visibility depend on the surface, channel, and permissions.

Key Insight: A raia agent is not a replacement for your team — it is a force multiplier. It handles the repetitive 80% so your team can focus on the complex 20%.
